Twenty-eight days, and no way around it

Staked DOT — whether nominated directly or held in a nomination pool — cannot be transferred until it has gone through an unbonding period of twenty-eight days. This is a protocol rule, not a platform policy, and nobody can accelerate it. It is by some distance the longest exit among the assets on this site, and it is the single most important thing to know if you are thinking about selling: a quote taken today is meaningless if the coins only become available a month from now. Start the unbonding first, then come back and sell when the DOT is free. If you need out sooner, a liquid staking derivative can be swapped on-chain immediately, at whatever spread the market is charging.

The 2020 redenomination still misleads people reading old numbers

In August 2020 Polkadot redenominated: one old DOT became one hundred new DOT, with every balance scaled accordingly. Nobody gained or lost value, but every price, supply figure and article written before that date is off by a factor of a hundred. If you are comparing a historic price to today's, or working out a cost basis from a 2019 purchase, check which denomination the figure is in. It is the most common source of confusion in DOT record-keeping.

Addresses look different on every Polkadot-family chain

Polkadot uses the SS58 address format, which encodes which network the address belongs to. The same underlying key produces an address starting with 1 on Polkadot, a different-looking one on Kusama, and different ones again on each parachain. This is convenient in a wallet and dangerous in a copy-paste: an address that is valid in the format sense may belong to a different chain entirely. Send from Polkadot's relay chain to the address on the payout screen, and if your DOT is sitting on a parachain, move it back first.

What DOT is for beyond holding it

Polkadot launched in 2020 as a network of networks: a central relay chain provides shared security, and parachains connect to it rather than bootstrapping their own validators. DOT is used to secure that relay chain through staking, to vote in on-chain governance, and to obtain the blockspace parachains need — a mechanism that has moved from fixed-term slot auctions to a more flexible coretime market. For a seller none of that changes the mechanics, but it explains why a large share of the supply is staked and therefore twenty-eight days from being sellable at any given time.

How long does it take to send DOT to us?

Polkadot settles on Polkadot, where a transfer typically confirms in 1–2 minutes. Polkadot produces a block every ~6 seconds and finalizes through GRANDPA typically within 30–60 seconds. Exchange deposits credit in a few minutes. Mind the existential deposit: relay-chain accounts below 1 DOT are reaped. We start your payout once the transfer has confirmed on-chain, so this is the part of a sale you are usually waiting on.

What does it cost to send DOT?

That is a Polkadot network fee, paid to the network rather than to us: Typically a few cents per transfer in 2025–2026, paid in DOT. See /fees-and-limits for what Anytime Capital charges.

What do DOT addresses look like?

Polkadot address: Starts with 1 (SS58 format). Looks superficially like a legacy Bitcoin address — it isn't; never mix the two Check the first and last characters against the address on the payout screen before you send — a Polkadot transfer cannot be reversed once it is confirmed.
