CashAddr exists because the old format was dangerous
Bitcoin Cash forked from Bitcoin in August 2017 and inherited its address format, which meant a BCH address and a BTC address looked identical. People sent coins to the wrong chain constantly. CashAddr was introduced in 2018 to fix it: addresses now begin with q or p, often written with a bitcoincash: prefix. Legacy-format BCH addresses still work and some older wallets still show them, which is why the confusion has never entirely gone away. If the address you are copying could plausibly be a Bitcoin address, stop and check.
What the fork actually changed
The 2017 split was an argument about block size. Bitcoin Cash raised the limit — first to 8MB, later much further — so that more transactions fit in each block and fees stay low even when the network is busy. Bitcoin kept small blocks and pursued off-chain scaling instead. Everything else, including the 21 million supply cap and the halving schedule, carried over. Bitcoin Cash has itself been forked since, most visibly by Bitcoin SV in 2018, so a wallet from that era may hold balances on more than one chain.
Cheap and fast on-chain, which is the whole point
Because block space is abundant, BCH transfers typically cost well under a cent and confirm in the normal ten-minute rhythm inherited from Bitcoin, with zero-confirmation transactions widely accepted for small amounts in the merchant tooling built around it. If you are selling, that means the network side of the transaction is rarely the constraint. Bitcoin Cash also supports tokens and, since the 2023 upgrade, on-chain contracts — features that do not affect a straightforward sale but do explain why some balances arrive from unusual wallets.
If you held Bitcoin before August 2017
Anyone holding BTC in their own wallet at the time of the fork received an equal balance of BCH on the new chain. A lot of those balances have never been touched, and people rediscover them years later when they restore an old seed phrase. If that is how you came to hold BCH, the coins are yours to sell — but be careful with the recovery: importing an old seed into an unfamiliar wallet is a well-known target for scams, and the original BTC balance is at risk in the same wallet.
How long does it take to send BCH to us?
Bitcoin Cash settles on Bitcoin Cash, where a transfer typically confirms in 10–60 minutes (usable in seconds for small payments). Bitcoin Cash mirrors Bitcoin's 10-minute blocks, but its blocks are rarely full — fees stay under a cent and zero-confirmation payments are commonly accepted for small amounts. Exchanges typically credit after 1–6 confirmations, so 10–60 minutes for deposits. We start your payout once the transfer has confirmed on-chain, so this is the part of a sale you are usually waiting on.
What does it cost to send BCH?
That is a Bitcoin Cash network fee, paid to the network rather than to us: Typically well under $0.01 per transaction in 2025–2026. See /fees-and-limits for what Anytime Capital charges.
What do BCH addresses look like?
CashAddr: Starts with q (or bitcoincash:q…). The standard BCH format — introduced specifically to stop BTC/BCH mix-ups Check the first and last characters against the address on the payout screen before you send — a Bitcoin Cash transfer cannot be reversed once it is confirmed.
