What Is Cosmos?
Cosmos refers to a blockchain ecosystem built around interoperability. The Cosmos Hub is the first of many interconnected blockchains powered by the interchain stack, and ATOM is the Cosmos Hub's primary token.
What Can You Do With Cosmos?
ATOM can be transferred, delegated to validators through proof of stake, and used in on-chain governance on the Cosmos Hub. The broader Cosmos vision centers on interoperable blockchains connected through the interchain stack.
How Much Is One ATOM Worth?
ATOM's price changes continuously with market activity. Check our platform for the live ATOM price before you buy or sell.
When Did Cosmos Start?
The Cosmos Hub mainnet launched on March 13, 2019.
Is Cosmos a Good Investment?
ATOM may appeal to buyers who want exposure to an ecosystem centered on blockchain interoperability, staking, and governance. Its long-term case depends on continued relevance of the Cosmos Hub and the broader interchain model.
The Cosmos SDK succeeded more than the Cosmos Hub did
Cosmos set out to make it easy to launch a purpose-built blockchain rather than to be one dominant chain, and by that measure it worked: dYdX, Celestia, Injective, Sei and dozens of others are built with the Cosmos SDK. The complication for ATOM holders is that those chains are sovereign. They have their own tokens, their own validators, and no obligation to the Hub. ATOM secures the Hub and pays for its services; it does not automatically capture value from the ecosystem it seeded. That tension is the central argument in Cosmos governance and it is worth understanding before buying.
IBC moves assets without a bridge operator
Most cross-chain transfers rely on a bridge — a contract holding locked funds, run by somebody, and historically the single most attacked piece of infrastructure in crypto. Inter-Blockchain Communication instead lets two chains verify each other's consensus directly, so a transfer is a protocol operation rather than a custodial one. It only works between chains that speak IBC, which is the trade-off, but within the Cosmos ecosystem it removes the bridge risk entirely.
